When returning home tonight, I was shaken from the depths of thought by the sight of a golden-haired girl being firmly pulled up the subway stairs to street-level. She kept one arm outstretched with a tight grip on her mother's two fingers as she was taken through a mob of subway passengers. With her little body pulled in ways impossible for a child with a reach of only thirty inches, and her line of sight resting decidedly at knee level, she hopelessly held her other arm out straight backward to an equally small and equally golden little boy. Pulling his weight as well as her own, she climbed each stair, and, with a plush fish pinched between her teeth, remained the only force keeping her brother from being swallowed by a sea of lost twenty-somethings who, long ago, fried both their brains and their personalities listening to The Promise Ring when they should have been doing their geometry homework. posted by XX at 12:36 AM |
